E-Bike Safety: What Parents Need to Know

E-bikes are becoming more common among students, but they can also be dangerous if used without proper precautions. At high speeds, even a small mistake can lead to a serious injury. As parents and guardians, your guidance is essential in helping students ride safely—or in some cases, deciding whether they are ready to ride at all.

Why E-Bikes Can Be Dangerous for Students

High speeds: Many e-bikes can travel between 20–28 mph. A crash at those speeds can cause severe injury, even with a helmet.

Traffic risks: Students must share the road with cars and trucks. Inexperience or poor judgment can make navigating traffic dangerous.

Distractions: Riding with earbuds in, using a phone, or carrying passengers increases the risk of an accident.

Inexperience: Younger riders may not fully understand traffic rules, braking distances, or the power of the motor.

Visibility issues: Drivers may not see e-bikes, especially at dawn, dusk, or when students wear dark clothing.

E-Bike Safety Checklist

  • Wear a helmet every time.

  • Ride the right class of e-bike (no Class 3 under age 16).

  • Follow traffic laws—stop at lights/signs, ride with traffic.

  • Stay visible—use lights, reflectors, and bright clothing.

  • Avoid distractions—no phones, earbuds, or extra passengers.

  • Know where to ride—choose safe routes, avoid high-traffic areas.

  • Check the bike—brakes, tires, and battery before each ride.
